520 |a Although the crucial importance of relativism in modern religious consciousness has been acknowledged by many sociologists of religion, few studies have attempted to operationalize the term and to empirically test the effect of relativism on ordinary indices of religious behavior. In a questionnaire survey of religious attitudes in a New England suburb, this study undertook (1) An operational definition of relativism; (2) a description of the pervasiveness of relativism among the laity sampled; and (3) an investigation of the relationship between relativism and some indices of institutional religious practice. Relativism was found to be widespread and only weakly related to the rejection of orthodox beliefs and practices of devotion, a lack of interest in religious questions, and to a lack of participation in church ritual and club membership. Perhaps relativism and commitment to a particular religious tradition need not represent mutually exclusive tendencies.
