Description
Résumé:In this paper, I explore the Confucian notion of harmony, particularly the ways that Asian women embrace it. The guiding question is "Should we de-Confucianize Asian women in order to engage them in genuine feminist dialogue?" With this question in mind, I explore the dynamic of Confucianism and modernization in terms of its impact on Asian women. I challenge us to recognize how the process of modernization has affected Asian women's lives, producing complex psychological reactions and consequences. I proceeded to criticize the Western stereotypes and misinterpretations of Confucianism, which modernization has shaped over the past century. Then, I have chosen the notion of harmony, one of the highest Confucian values, as an example of how this long-cherished value in Asia can be reclaimed as one of the major sources and strategies for Asian feminism.
