Description
Résumé:A collection of essays which were presented at a conference in San Francisco in summer 1996 on gender, politics and the state. The shared view of the essays is that gender questions are central to the understanding of Middle Eastern affairs and politics. The essays take different Middle Eastern countries as examples and focus on varying issues among other: the participation of women in political parties and business life, formal and informal networks among women, the threat political Islam causes to the position of women, the role nationalism and cultural identity impose on women, the impact international financial aid has on the position of women.
