520 |a The history of contemporary biblical exegesis is made up of three fundamental hermeneutical shifts, in which knowledge of literature has always been an essential partner: hermeneutics centred on the author, hermeneutics centred on the text and hermeneutics starting from the role of the reader. These shifts of paradigm do not imply the suppression of the previous model; very often they are concomitant or complementary, in a process attentive to the complexity of the act of interpretation. All these shifts start from one fundamental premise: the text is woven, it is textile, a texture, a weave, a woven plot, fabric. As a result, interpretation cannot live on the aspiration to, or the imposition of, a single meaning. To interpret is - as literature shows - to appreciate the plural of which the text is made, in the unique dynamism inherent in it. Only this gives access to the infinity of reading.
