Description
Résumé:This article examines two enigmatic figures mentioned in the book of Hosea-King Yareb and Shalman. 1 suggest that the former is to be identified as the Assyrian king Sennacherib and the latter as Shalmaneser V. This has significant implications for the date of the core of the Book of Hosea; it requires a date at least two decades later than the current scholarly consensus. In defending this later date, I examine several oracles in the Book of Hosea and suggest that they actually make more sense in the aftermath of the fall of Samaria, rather than in the years prior to its fall.
