Résumé: | Selections from the conference sponsored by the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), December 7, 1989. Miller, a member of the policy planning staff of the U.S. State Department, sets out the reasons, why elections in the occupied territories are considered to be quintessential for generating a real peace process. Ashrawi from Birzeit classifies and discusses fourteen major achievements of the intifada. She disagrees with some of Miller's assumptions. Cobban sheds light on the links between the intifada and the PLO and she also discusses the changing balances between the Palestinians and Israelis. Al-Hassan, chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Palestine National Council, addresses the problems of false images, that impair the credibility of Palestinian peace initiatives. In the discussion and in the concluding remarks by Neumann the role of Islamic fundamentalism and the performance of Shamir's diplomacy are debated. (DÜI-Asd) |
