The purpose of the present study was to examine how religiosity relates to healthrelated quality of life (HRQOL) using BMI status as a stressor. We fit and compared the five common analytic models used to explain how religious practice can influence people's reaction to stress. The distress-deterrent model demonstrated the best overall fit. BMI status and religiosity had independent (and opposite) influences on emotional, social, and work/school domains of the PedsQL™ Young Adult Scales. Higher BMI values were associated with poorer perceived physical, emotional, social, and school/work functioning, while higher religiosity values were associated with better functioning in the emotional, social, and work/school domains. This was true even after controlling for the demographic variables. Our findings have implications for future research investigating the relations beteween religiosity, HRQOL, and BMI status. | ||
