| Zusammenfassung: | Ecumenical relationships between national churches, such as the churches of the Anglican Communion and those of the Union of Utrecht of Old Catholic Churches, lead to an increase in the international network of these churches. This article explores this in relation to the aforementioned ecumenical relationship based on the formal correspondence between Andreas Rinkel as president of the International Bishops' Conference of the Union of Utrecht and Urs Kiiry as its secretary. It transpires that the international dimension of their theologizing and ecclesial life was expanded in three main ways: 1) the need for formal representation led them to embody ecumenical relations internationally by attending episcopal consecrations, the enthronement of primates and gatherings such as the Lambeth Conference; 2) the various ecumenical endeavors of churches of the Anglican Communion (e.g., church unions in South Asia, Anglican-Methodist dialogue in England, the Wider Episcopal Fellowship) meant that the Old Catholic bishops had to orient themselves in a more international, even global fashion, in the scope of their theologizing; 3) a variety of contacts also touched on geopolitical matters, notably those having to do with the Cold War and the Iron Curtain. |
