| Zusammenfassung: | Eannatum's Stele of the Vultures is one of the most famous stelae of third millennium BCE Mesopotamia. It records in text and image the victory of Lagash over Umma in a border conflict. The stele is decorated on two sides, named the "historical" side and the "mythological" side by the nature of the scenes depicted. Only seven fragments of the stele remain, and various reconstructions of both sides have been proposed by academics such as Barrelet (1970), Winter (2010b) and Romano (2007). This paper seeks to further the discussion by proposing a reconstruction of one aspect of the stele - the object on the far right of the lower register of the mythological side of the stele (see fig. 4). This reconstruction influences the reading of other objects depicted on the same side of the stele, and these are also discussed and reconstructed. |
