Zusammenfassung:Questions raised by developmental psychologist Robert Kegan guide this preliminary inquiry into the cognitive overload and the emotional and physical exhaustion reported by a significant number of seminary students in my teaching context, especially those in pastoral care and counseling courses. Their condition relates at least in part to expectations that are explicitly and implicitly embedded in the language of institutional and programmatic student learning outcomes, competencies to be achieved, course readings, and assignments. As explained in this article, these expectations could be revisited in order to better support overall student learning and well-being.
