| Zusammenfassung: | Nubia was converted to Christianity in the 6th century by missions dispatched from Byzantium. According to the narrative of John of Ephesus, a contemporary author, Emperor Justinian I and his wife, Empress Theodora, each dispatched a mission to Nubia, each expounding a different doctrine and competing against the other. This paper challenges these allegations by John of Ephesus and asks whether a political disagreement existed between the imperial couple about their religious policy in Africa or whether they substantially co-promoted the interests of the Byzantine Empire in this region. |
