For permissions, please e-mail: journals.permissions@oup.comMARTIN KAVKA AND RUSSELL MCCUTCHEON (“our critics”) only want to assist (even though it borders on the supercilious) in maintaining the boundaries of what they deem to be acceptable academic discourse. They raise many issues, but due to limited space, we respond to only three: (1) the form of their response and our article’s aim; (2) the notion of “justice” and its relation to the aims in the final section of our article, which particularly evoked the annoyance of our critics; and (3) the intersection of academic discourse and advocacy.Our critics deliberately foreground form over content, thereby setting up a predetermined framework with which to view the content of our article based on their strong—and contradictory—views on how religion studies should be “properly” done....
