Zusammenfassung: | This response to William Arnal and Russell McCutcheon’s The Sacred Is The Profane argues that scholars of religious studies can self-identify as theologians (if they so choose), if “theology” is taken not as a discourse that reports on God’s nature or action or will, but as a discourse that determines what beliefs and actions might be justifiably inferred from a community’s authoritative texts and exemplars. Doing theology as a field of inference—as a series of if-then statements—is something that scholars can do regardless of religious confession (or lack thereof). |
